In recent years, the Wibautstraat has undergone a complete transformation, evolving into a popular and vibrant part of the city. Two projects by Boelens de Gruyter have played a significant role in this redevelopment, giving a major boost to the neighbourhood and serving as catalyst for broader change.
Originally built in 1961, the former Jan Bommerhuis has played a pivotal role in the transformation of the Wibautstraat. The iconic building has been redeveloped into a vibrant residential complex with 162 apartments, bringing new energy and life to the area. Three additional floors were added to the original structure to accommodate the new homes.
A distinctive feature of the redevelopment is the addition of gallery walkways at the rear of the building, which are combined with private balconies. This creates a semi-public space that encourages interaction and fosters a sense of community among residents.
A key milestone in the transformation of the Wibautstraat is the repurposing of the Parool Tower and the Trouw Building. These striking landmarks, once home to two influential newspapers, have been given a new lease of life as vibrant student housing. While their historic character has been carefully preserved, the redevelopment offers a renewed future for both these iconic buildings and their surrounding area.
