Completed in 1954, the building was originally considered a state-of-the-art home for the department store Galeries Modernes, which had been located on Hoogstraat since the late 19th century. Its transformation into a hotel ensures that this iconic building is preserved for the city. The former department store has also been expanded with an additional floor.
The basement of the hotel supports services and a gym. On the ground floor, the main entrance to the hotel is located on Grotekerkplein, while retail spaces open into the Hoogstraat. The first four floors of the building accommodate a total of 180 hotel rooms, and at the heart of the structure is a patio that allows daylight deep into the building. A green rooftop landscape has been added, enhancing both sustainability and aesthetics. The rooftop pavilion serves as a spectacular sky lounge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape.
The building has been expanded by 2,000 m², increasing its gross floor area from 5,500 m² to 7,500 m². The new design by KAAN Architecten pays homage to Rotterdam’s post-war reconstruction era, seamlessly blending historical elements with contemporary architecture.
