About This Project
Schorpioenstraat 51-71, Rotterdam
16,000 m²
169 apartments
Residential and retail
Completion 2024

The redevelopment of the office building The Betz marks the beginning of a major transformation in the Rotterdam Alexander area. It represents the first step in turning this previously anonymous and monotonous zone into a dynamic urban centre with a strong mix of residential, commercial, retail, and leisure functions.

In collaboration with Profound Asset Management, the existing building is being transformed into a sustainable residential tower. Once completed, the building will accommodate 169 homes. The current façade will undergo a major redesign, incorporate balconies and giving the building a contemporary new look. The redevelopment will deliver approximately 15,000 m² of residential space, alongside 1,000 m² of high-quality amenities on the ground floor. A rooftop bar and a 300 m² rooftop garden will be located on the 10th floor, adding social and green space to the development.

The internationally operating architecture firm Mecanoo, based in Delft, was responsible for the design. The concept for The Betz building aligns closely with Mecanoo’s ambition to create architecture for people, and to preserve and enhance the characteristic elements of buildings during renovations. In the case of The Betz, this means restoring the structure to its original rectangular form and adding green outdoor spaces on the rooftops, along with an accessible and inviting ground floor.
