Breathing new life into a forgotten space

Rootz

A sustainable neighbourhood designed for connection.

A sustainable, green, and inclusive neighbourhood is being developed in Haarlem: Rootz. What sets this concept apart from other urban developments is its bold commitment to nature: A city among the trees. Nature forms the foundation of the design.

Urban greenery in Haarlem’s city centre.

Breathing new life into a forgotten space

This project will bring new energy to the area with a unique identity. Green roofs, gardens, and lush planting make it a neighbourhood that breathes, cools, and nourishes. An important element in this development is the community pavilion. The central place in the neighbourhood where people can meet, share meals and organise activities. In total, 660 homes for rent and purchase will be realised here.

Surrounded by green

Energy-efficient technologies, durable insulation and intelligent energy solutions ensure that Rootz offers a responsible and future-ready way of living. More than 50% of the area consists of green space: trees, living walls, rooftop gardens, and public spaces. These elements help cool the area on warm days, capture rainwater, and improve air quality. As a result, not only does the neighbourhood benefit from a more pleasant climate, but the city as a whole does too.

A central place where the neighbourhood comes alive through connection, shared moments, and activities.

Accessible location

Rootz is centrally located in Haarlem, close to the Schalkwijk shopping centre and easily accessible by bike and public transport. It encourages a conscious way of living, prioritising cycling over car use.
