The city of the future begins today in Merwede. In this former industrial area, space is being transformed into a green and sustainable neighbourhood – a place where connection and sharing take priority over ownership. Together with G&S& Vastgoed, we are proud to be part of this ambitious project – a neighbourhood that proves urban density and green living can go hand in hand.
The design encourages residents to travel by bicycle, shared vehicles, and public transportation. The location makes this concept possible: the area lies close to Utrecht Central Station, the city center, and major public transport links. Merwede demonstrates how a well-connected location and smart mobility solutions can complement each other another seamlessly.
The neighbourhood is designed with connection and interactions as central principles. Residents share spaces like inner gardens, rooftop terraces, workspaces, and other communal areas, making spontaneous encounters a natural and effortless part of everyday life. In this way, Merwede becomes more than just a residential area – it becomes a sustainable, social, and inclusive urban neighbourhood.
Sustainability is at the heart of Merwede. The district uses environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar power and an underground thermal energy storage system. Rainwater is collected and buffered, helping the area better manage with heavy rainfall and heat.
